North Beach life member Barrie Kernaghan (pictured above right) has bagged 3 State & 3 National Gold medals at this year’s Masters State and Australian Championships.
At 73 years young, the former Hamersley Little Athletics & Karrinyup Seniors president has had a marvellous season in Track & Field this year winning the state M70 60m, 100m & 200m events.
Choosing not to run the 400m at states because of a niggling groin injury, and battling a debilitating knee problem all season, Kernaghan has managed to come up trumps when it counted most. A fantastic effort by the regular Australian representitive.
He added another 3 Gold medals at the Australian Masters Championships in the 200m, 400m & 4x400m relay events in Melbourne. And narrowly missed out on another 2 gold medals by snatching silver in the 60m & 100m track events.
The Blues veteran competes every Friday night at the WA Athletics Stadium and after a long hot summer of competition, he will now have the winter off and plans to compete for Australia at the World Masters Athletics Championships next year in Brazil.
